Welcome back to our Class 9 Geography series! Today, we are diving into one of the most interesting and important chapters in the NCERT syllabus: Chapter 4: Climate.
Have you ever wondered why we wear woollens in December, or why it rains so heavily in July? The answer lies in the climate. Understanding India's climate is like solving a massive puzzle involving winds, mountains, and oceans. 1. Climate vs. Weather: What's the Difference?
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but in geography, they mean very different things:
Weather: The state of the atmosphere over an area at any given point in time. It can change within minutes or hours (e.g., a sunny morning turning into a rainy afternoon).
Climate: The sum total of weather conditions and variations over a large area for a long period of time (usually more than 30 years).
The Elements of Weather and Climate:
Both are measured using the same elements: Temperature, Atmospheric Pressure, Wind, Humidity, and Precipitation.
India's Climate Type:
India's climate is described as the "Monsoon" type. The word monsoon is derived from the Arabic word 'mausim', which literally means season. It refers to the seasonal reversal in the wind direction during a year.
2. The 6 Major Climatic Controls
Globally, the climate of any place is controlled by six major factors. You can remember them easily for your exams:
Latitude: Because the Earth is curved, the amount of solar energy received varies according to latitude. It gets colder as you move from the equator to the poles.
Altitude: As you go higher up from the surface of the earth, the atmosphere becomes less dense and temperature decreases. This is why hill stations are cool even in summer.
Pressure and Wind System: This depends on the latitude and altitude of a place, influencing its temperature and rainfall patterns.
Distance from the Sea: The sea has a moderating effect on climate. Places near the coast have an equable climate, while places far from the sea experience extreme weather conditions (very hot in summer, very cold in winter). This is known as continentality.
Ocean Currents: Warm and cold ocean currents, along with onshore winds, affect the climate of the coastal areas.
Relief Features: High mountains act as barriers for cold or hot winds. They may also cause precipitation if they block rain-bearing winds.
3. Factors Affecting India's Climate
Now, let's apply those controls specifically to India:
Latitude: The Tropic of Cancer (23° 30' N) passes right through the middle of India, from the Rann of Kachchh in the west to Mizoram in the east. The southern half lies in the tropical area, while the northern half lies in the sub-tropical area.
Altitude: India has the mighty Himalayas in the north (average height of 6,000 meters). They prevent the freezing cold winds from Central Asia from entering the subcontinent, making our winters milder compared to central Asia.
Pressure and Winds: India lies in the region of north-easterly winds. However, unique pressure conditions, the Coriolis force, and upper-air circulation (Jet Streams) completely alter the wind patterns, bringing the monsoon rains.
4. The Mechanism of the Monsoons
The Indian monsoon is a complex weather phenomenon. Here is a simplified breakdown of what causes it:
Differential Heating: Land heats up and cools down much faster than water. In summer, the Indian landmass gets intensely hot, creating a low-pressure area, while the surrounding seas are relatively cool, creating high pressure. Winds blow from high to low pressure.
Shift of the ITCZ: The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (a broad trough of low pressure) shifts northwards over the Ganga plain during summer, pulling winds toward India.
The Madagascar High Pressure: The presence of a high-pressure area over the Indian Ocean (east of Madagascar) pushes winds toward the Indian subcontinent.
The Tibetan Plateau: It gets intensely heated during summer, causing strong vertical air currents and the formation of low pressure.
5. The Four Seasons of India
The meteorology department recognizes four distinct seasons in India:
1. The Cold Weather Season (Winter)
Duration: Mid-November to February.
Characteristics: Days are warm, and nights are cold. Frost is common in the north, and snow falls in the higher Himalayas.
Rainfall: Mostly dry, but the Tamil Nadu coast gets rain from northeast trade winds. Northern India receives light rainfall from "Western Cyclonic Disturbances" coming from the Mediterranean Sea—this winter rain (locally known as mahawat) is very important for the cultivation of rabi crops like wheat.
2. The Hot Weather Season (Summer)
Duration: March to May.
Characteristics: High temperatures and low air pressure. The northern plains experience 'Loo'—strong, gusty, hot, dry winds blowing during the day.
Pre-Monsoon Showers: * Kaal Baisakhi: Localized thunderstorms with violent winds and heavy rain in West Bengal.
Mango Showers: Pre-monsoon showers in Kerala and Karnataka that help in the early ripening of mangoes.
3. Advancing Monsoon (The Rainy Season)
Duration: June to September.
Characteristics: South-west monsoon winds rush into India, bringing massive amounts of moisture.
Key Fact: The maximum rainfall is received in the northeastern parts of the country. Mawsynram, located in the southern ranges of the Khasi Hills, receives the highest average rainfall in the world!
4. Retreating/Post Monsoons (The Transition Season)
Duration: October to November.
Characteristics: The monsoon winds gradually withdraw. The skies become clear, and temperatures rise. The combination of high temperature and high humidity makes the weather rather oppressive during the day. This is widely known as "October Heat".
Cyclones: This season is infamous for destructive tropical cyclones that originate over the Andaman Sea and hit the eastern coast of India (Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu).
